Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

…go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

This command is commonly known as “the Great Commission. It is simple, straightforward, and singular; we are to make disciples.

But what exactly is a disciple and how does one go about “making” a disciple? To be clear, a disciple is not a mere convert, but rather he or she is a student or a scholar (It’s what the word “disciple” means). For our purposes, this means that disciples are not spontaneously created upon conversion, but rather there is a progression to making disciples, which includes the three following applications.

FIRST – You are to “go,” which communicates intentionality; cognitively and proactively making disciples. You don’t wait for them to come to you, you go to them.

SECOND – You are to “baptize,” which in this context is not talking about immersing a disciple in water, but rather immersing them in the study of God’s Word.

THIRD – You are to “teach,” which means that merely pointing the disciple to the study of God’s Word is only half the process. You must also live God’s Word in front of them, teaching by example.

This is, admittedly, a tall order. Which is why Christ clarifies one final thing in His commission – and that is His continued presence.

Matthew 28:20b

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

In the original Greek, the word “always” is a compound word meaning, “the whole of the day,” or “the entirety of the day.” What this means for us is that in all our discipling endeavors, Christ promises to be present, working cooperatively with us, from start to finish.

With that said, how well are you complying or cooperating with the Lord’s command? It’s still fairly early into the new year, so it’s not too late to do some soul searching and make some changes.

Have a great Monday!
