Memorial Day

Pastor David

Today, people throughout our nation will be honoring the estimated 1.3 million Americans who gave up their lives fighting for our freedom. They will be going to grave sites and dropping off flowers, they’ll be posting patriotic messages on social media and even barbecuing hotdogs and hamburgers all in honor of those 1.3 million.

When speaking on death, Paul wanted to encourage those who were facing it by reminding them of the resurrection:

1 Corinthians 15:51-53 But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.

1.3 million Americans giving up their lives in war is a stark reminder that death is not a distant thing. But as Christians we can have hope that death is not the final stop. Today we honor the 1.3 million who fought for this country, but let's also take time to honor the one who gave up his life to give us a different freedom, a freedom from sin and death. This freedom also provides us the hope of the passage read above, that we will be transformed and that death loses its grasp on us.

So, I end this by saying thank you to those who gave up their lives for our freedom in the United States and an even bigger thank you to Jesus who gave up his life so we can have freedom in this life and the next!
