Holy Week
Pastor Rachael
’” Matthew 21:9
Yesterday was Palm Sunday. That is, what we call in the church, the start to Holy Week (also called Passion Week). Holy Week is described as the last days of Jesus’ life that happen between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.
Each day of the week, we celebrate/remember a specific thing.
Palm Sunday - the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem
Holy Monday - Jesus cleared the temple of the sellers and merchants
Holy Tuesday - Jesus confronts the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders
Holy Wednesday - Judas betrays Jesus
Maundy Thursday - the Last Supper
Good Friday - the crucifixion of Jesus
Holy Saturday - Jesus was in the tomb
Easter Sunday - Jesus was resurrected
Holy Week takes up 8 of Matthew’s 28 chapters, 6 of Mark’s 16 chapters, 6 of Luke’s 24 chapters, and 10 of John’s 21 chapters. So much of the Bible is taken up describing the last week of Jesus’ life. In fact, it could also be said that all of the Old Testament was leading up to this moment, and all of the New Testament reflects it in theology and practical living.
I encourage you to make the best of this week. It includes some of the brightest and darkest days in history. Holy Week is a reminder to stop, slow down, and reflect and pray on the sacrifice that Jesus made for us and what we can do to be disciples and spread the good news of what happened that Holy Week.
Have a blessed Holy Week!
For your reference, here is where you can find the passion narratives, and I encourage you to read them this week:
Matthew 21-28
Mark 11-16
Luke 19-24
John 12-21
