In John 2 we read about the account of Jesus at the wedding ceremony. They knew how to party back then because wedding celebrations could last up to a week. The host of this wedding party runs out of wine and Jesus' mother asks him to help out. There’s a lot of things we could talk about here, like Jesus calling his mom “woman” in the English translation, which wasn’t an insult, but it also wasn't a personal kind of label that a son would have for his mom. Or we could talk about Jesus saying it wasn’t his time. But that’s not the focus today. What I want to focus on is the reason why Jesus turned the water into wine, or more so why he decided to do a miracle that day.
If you read the previous chapter we see John the baptist declaring Jesus as the chosen one. Then we read about some men deciding to follow Jesus and become his disciples. John 2:1 tells us that just a couple days later is when this account of Jesus turning water into wine happens. So, Jesus has these new guys who he would have known well (being the son of God) but who wouldn’t have known him well just yet (since they only knew him for a couple days). It seems that Jesus was trying to show these men who decided to follow him that he wasn’t like the other Rabbis who had disciples around them. He was different. Some of these disciples had already heard the declaration of John the Baptist over Jesus which is why they decided to follow him.
But here Jesus adds onto the pile that John is trying to show by recording these miracles. You see, this miracle is found only in the book of John, every other gospel doesn’t include this account. John seems to have had a goal to show that Jesus is God and so he didn’t worry so much about the genealogies or parables of Jesus that the other gospels covered. Instead he focused more on the miracles. And this is Jesus' first one and we can see why he did it:
John 2:11-What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
Jesus wanted to show these guys who had only known him for a few days that he was different. And this miracle was only the first of many they would end up seeing that would point them to the fact that Jesus is God. It’s important for them to know this as they would be the ones with the burden of establishing the church and starting the spreading of the good news throughout the entire world after Jesus returned to heaven. Jesus wasn’t another Bible figure like King David, Elijah or Moses. He was God incarnate. God in the flesh. Jesus is God. And God came down to earth to take your place on the cross because he loves you. And that’s your reminder today.
