It seems that one of the goals of the book of John was to show that Jesus was not just a man walking around the earth, but that he was also God in the flesh. He wasn’t created, he’s always been.

John 1:1-2- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.  

Why does it matter if Jesus was God or not?

Because of two reasons:

1.    If Jesus was just a man who walked this earth, his life (or the value of it) would not be enough to save the world. At best it would be a 1 for 1 scenario and there have been a lot more than just 1 person who has lived in this world. But because Jesus was also God, his value increased infinitely so that his sacrifice was worth more than just one human life. Instead it could cover the sins of all those who turn to him.

2.    If Jesus was just a man who lived a perfect life, then there would be another path into the presence of the Father and that path would be living a sinless life under our own power. So, you would have the option to turn to Jesus and you would have the option of just not sinning your entire life in order to find salvation. But we can just look at the Old testament to see Israel who was given the standard to live by, failing over and over and over again. And we also have verses like: John 14:6- Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. This shuts the door on entering into the presence of God under our own power. As you read this you can think of how many times you acted in rebellion against God just like Israel did in the Old Testament and be reminded how hopeless we would be if our salvation depended on living a sinless life on our own. Paul talks about this in Romans 7 starting at verse 14. We know what we should do (obey God) but we do not do it, instead we do what we don’t want to do…sin.

Yes, Jesus came to earth and took on flesh and blood, he got hungry, he grew tired and he dealt with temptation. Because of this he can relate to us and know our struggles, but at the same time, he also gave us THE example of how to live our lives. But Jesus was also God. He has always been God and will continue to be God, there isn’t a point in history where Jesus lost his divinity even here on earth. Scripture shows this, just like the first passage today said. And it’s important that Jesus was God, because if he wasn’t we would be back in our previous state of hopelessness because salvation would be out of our reach. But it isn’t because of Jesus. Thanks be to God the Father for sending his Son!
