Psalm 37:1-6 (NIV)

Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.   Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.   Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.   Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.

In this context, the word “fret” is a multi-faceted word conveying a series of overlapping emotions such as anger, resentment, jealousy, and self-pity. Psalm 37 commands you not to fret because, at the end of the day, it accomplishes nothing. Instead, it offers a three-step alternative.

STEP ONE: TRUST IN THE LORD

Trusting in the Lord is choosing to believe, and to act upon, the instruction of God’s Word.

STEP TWO: TAKE DELIGHT IN THE LORD

Taking delight in the Lord means investing yourself into knowing Him personally through the study of His Word, through prayer, and through worship.

 STEP THREE: COMMIT YOUR WAY TO THE LORD

Committing your way to the Lord entails a continuing trust and reliance upon Him whatever the circumstances.

 The psalm goes on to say that when you do these three things, you will be vindicated; that is the evidence of God’s blessing and favor on you will be obvious to everyone you encounter.

 As you start out your week, what will others see in you? Will they witness your frustration stemming from the troubles of this life or will they witness your peace stemming from your faith in God? Only you can decide the outcome.
