Eternal Life

Luke 10 tells the story of an expert in the law (that is, the Old Testament) who wanted to test the extent of Jesus’ knowledge. So, he asked the question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered the question with the parable of the Good Samaritan.

We all know the story of the good Samaritan. He rescued a beaten down Jewish traveler when no one else would. And while it teaches us some terrific lessons about human compassion, what does it have to do with eternal life?

For starters, what exactly is eternal life? Eternal life is not about just living forever; it’s about living forever – with purpose. What good is living forever, if you have nothing to live for?

That’s great, but – again – what does eternal life have to do with the parable of the Good Samaritan? It is this: You cannot produce eternal life in of yourself. Just like the beaten down Jewish traveler, you must have a rescuer who is willing to risk the time, the expenses, and the inconvenience to himself to save you. And praise be to God, we have such a rescuer in the person of Jesus Christ!

Acts 4:12 (ESV)

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

Let me challenge you to do two things. First, take the time to give praise and thanks to God for His wonderful gift of eternal life. Second, put your eternal life to good use by being a blessing to someone else today.
