Psalm 37:7 (NIV)
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.
Psalm 37 is a teaching psalm. In this case, it’s teaching you something about prayer; namely unanswered or delayed prayer whereby you’re tempted to give up.
In such circumstances the psalmist’s advice is two-fold; (1) be still and (2) wait patiently, which are not the same thing.
“Being still” has to do with silence; namely silencing the voices of doubt constantly whispering in your ear. You silence them by listening to God’s Word.
Romans 10:17 (ESV)
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Meanwhile “waiting patiently” has to do with routine; namely doing the same things over and over again, like continuing to pray.
Luke 18:1
And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.
The psalm implies that when you do those two things, you will “inherit the land,” which suggests that God’s reason for delayed prayer stems from the fact that He’s got something bigger in mind for you. A notable example of this principle is Zechariah and Elizabeth who, for years, had been praying for a child.
Luke 1:13-17 (NIV)
But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord... He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
Let me ask you a question: All those years when Zechariah and Elizabeth were praying, asking God for a child, do you think it even entered their minds to include all those details? But God thought of it – and He gave them so much more than they’d asked for.
Let me ask you another question: What makes you think that God would do any less for you?
Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Have a great Monday.
