The Fruit of the Spirit

Pastor Rachael

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

I know that Pastor Ken is finishing up his sermon series on the Fruit of the Spirit and the Gifts of the Spirit. Well, in kids church, for the months of September and October, we will be talking about each of the fruits of the Spirit and how they are the evidence of a person transformed by Christ.

Our main idea is that we can use the fruits to share the Gospel. These fruits or virtues are the outward manifestation of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. Let’s take a quick look at the 9 fruits and how God calls us to use them or how God used them to demonstrate those characters to us. (I will put the story/verses in here if you want to read the full story)

Love - The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) - We need to love our neighbor, even when the world tells us not to.

Joy - Parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32) - Joy is more than feeling happy, it is more stable and rooted in your relationship with God. A renewed feeling of joy is felt by the lost who are now found.

Peace - Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35-41) - True peace comes from God and we can trust that Jesus is always the peace in our storms.

Patience - The Life of Job (Job) - Even in times of great suffering, we need to have patience because we believe that God will see us through.

Kindness - Ruth and Naomi (Ruth) - You always have an opportunity to show kindness to someone, friend or family, and you should never be hesitant to show kindness.

Goodness/Faithfulness - Noah and the Ark (Genesis 7-9). God was so good to Noah. He kept him and his family safe in response to Noah being faithful to God. God is always faithful, He keeps His promises. God made a covenant with Noah and told him, via rainbow, that He would never destroy the earth with a flood; and He hasn’t.

Gentleness - Jesus and the Adulterous Woman (John 8:1-11). Jesus was gentle and showed mercy to the woman caught in adultery. When everyone else was ready to throw stones, Jesus was gentle with her and called them out.

Self-Control - Samson and Delilah (Judges 16:4-22). This is more of a what not to do. Samson had self-control, but when he was worn down and nagged, he gave in to temptation and told her his secret to this strength, and it was his ultimate downfall. Delilah also lacked self-control when she took a bribe to hurt Samson.

Pray with me - Lord, I thank you that you provided the Bible for us and Paul who wrote the book of Galatians to tell us more about you. I pray that you help us to exhibit these 9 fruits this week, and that when we do, we remember that we are being an example of you to others. Amen.
